The other day I was reading an article about nutrition in the doctor's office and came across some information about lemons, and how they were good for cleansing. Not one of those fad diets that you can only drink lemon and honey for 12 days and you're supposed to lose 20 pounds.
Instead, it talked about little things you can do everyday to help your body flush the toxins out of your system and make you healthier.
That's when I learned of celebrity nutritionist Kimberly Snyder. I'm not one to jump on the latest diet fad anymore, because I know how doing that in college messed with my metabolism. But, after reading over her website, her ideas were, well ... helpful and normal.
One of those was adding more lemon to your diet. Lemons, according to the website, help to cleanse the liver, while also adding extra vitamin C and enzymes to our diets. They also have a lot of flavor.
Since I love lemons this is an easy addition. For the past several days, I've been drinking hot water with a half of lemon squeezed into it either 30 minutes before my first meal, or an hour after. Then, instead of immediately reaching for a cup of tea when I was cold, I just heated water and added lemon.
I'm obsessed! The other night I made a salad dressing with fresh lemon that I'll share with you tomorrow.
Here is going to be the challenge -- keeping this habit when I go back to work tomorrow. It's easy when you're home, but getting up at 5:30 a.m. and commuting and then not getting back home until after 8 p.m. ... well, it kind of stinks, and makes it hard to keep healthy habits.

I hope Meyer Lemons count, because I'm just a tad addicted! You can't always find them here in upstate NY, but when I can get them (usually Price Chopper) I use them in everything that I can. I never gave much thought to making a kind of lemon tea with them, but I'll have to give it a try. Thanks for the tips!
ReplyDeleteI usually add lemon to iced water. Thanks for the tips! I'm looking forward to the dressing recipe!

ReplyDeleteGreat post! I never really eat/ suck on lemons unless I am at a restaurant and order water (and if they include it). I will start having to buy them now for my home. Thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteYou said it has to be either 30 minutes or an hour after. Can it be drunk anytime?
